Jefferson Como Fire Protection District

An emergency service that is very important to Indian Mountain in connection with wildfire is the Jefferson Como Fire Protection District (JCFPD), see http://www.jcfpd.org or call 719-836-3244.
The JCFPD was established in 1960. It is comprised of approximately 525 square miles in Park County. Its main administrative office is 4.5 miles southeast of US Route 285 at 20200 County Road 15 (i.e., Elkhorn Road). The District has paid professional staff available from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., seven days a week. After those hours, the same personnel are on call to meet fire suppression or emergency medical needs, along with trained volunteers.

The JCFPD typically has about 15 volunteer members trained to the Colorado State Certified Emergency Medical Responder level as well as the Colorado State Firefighter I and II certifications. The District has six additional stations that house various structural fire apparatus, wild-land fire apparatus, and emergency medical response apparatus and equipment. One of those additional stations is in Indian Mountain, as is an emergency water supply.

The JCFPD implements burn bans in Indian Mountain. If a red flag is flying beneath “Old Glory” at Station 5 on the Elkhorn Road, there is a burn ban in effect. That means NO OPEN BURNING OF ANY KIND!

The JCFPD in consultation with Park County, in early 2015 implemented a new program to require wildfire mitigation measures for all new construction within the District. The District will be imposing an impact fee of $250 for Wildland Mitigation on all new construction permits within those portions of Park County that make up the District. The fees will be applied to administrative costs to the District for inspections of such properties. The fees will also be applied to the purchase of a chipper for use within the District in the hopes of recycling forest products back to the properties, thereby reducing carbon emissions from burning.

There are other emergency services in Park County besides the JCFPD. The County government’s website at http://www.parkco.us/index.aspx?NID=98 provides contact information for those services.
